Let's look at the characteristics of our candles. Our candles are ethically produced in small quantities using eco-friendly components and packaging. Our candles are cruelty-free, vegan, and made without the use of parabens, phthalates or petroleum ingredients. We also use 100% soy wax that comes from sustainable agricultural crops within the USA. But what exactly is soy and why is it important?

Soy wax originates from soybeans (shocking isn't it?). They do this by taking cleaned, cracked, dehulled soybeans and rolling them into flake. The oil is taken out and the hydrogen is then produced. In addition the flakes that remain can be used for animal feed! This process alters the melting temperature so that it is stable at room temperature and ideal for candles. If being natural, renewable and biodegradable as well as vegan were not enough, soy wax typically has the longest burn time and is free of indoor air pollution.

What do you think of other waxes? Well, there are three other waxes commonly used in candles. These are; paraffin wax, beeswax, as well as coconut wax. Let's discuss them. Paraffin wax has been, arguably the most popular wax for candles especially fragranced candles, as it has a great scent throw. What is the reason why increasing numbers of companies switching to other waxes? It's because it's not renewable! Paraffin wax originates from petroleum, coal, or oil, and is a carcinogen! We are concerned about the environment, and our customer's health, we are here Brand & Iron, so renewable, sustainable and ethically-sourced ingredients are required.

Beeswax is is a well-known naturally sourced wax that works exceptionally well for candles generally. However, beeswax has an intense natural scent which isn't compatible with other scents. However, the most important thing is that beeswax is created with bees (obviously), and as a vegan candle company, this makes it unattainable.

Finally, there is coconut wax. Apart from the high cost, it's difficult to find truly authentic coconut oil. This is mostly due to the softness of coconut wax. Since it has such a low melting point, most coconut waxes are a blend, including one of the waxes mentioned above. While this in itself is not a problem, but due to the lack of transparency of manufacturers and the complicated language they use, it's nearly impossible to discern exactly what is in the mix, and even the reason why they're mixed in the first instance. We're committed to providing an organic sustainable, vegan, renewable and ethical candle, so we choose to use soy wax.

It's not just about using soy-based wax to make an eco-friendly and sustainable candle. We make use of a lead- and zinc-free cotton wick, which is toxin-free and easier to work with, and requires less maintenance than a wooden wick. What is it that makes our candles unique? Our values are reflected right down to the vancouver candle co packaging. Yes, the packing peanuts we use are also biodegradable; in fact, all of our packaging is recyclable. We also love to encourage clients to use or recycle their candle vessels.
